Recovering from Thanksgiving food comas is never easy, but there are plenty of things to do around the city that will get you off the sofa this week. From the Vancouver Outsider Arts Fest to a Halloween-themed Taylor Swift dance party, here are 10 of the best things to do in and around Vancouver this week (October 9-13).
Every year, the Vancouver Outsider Arts Festival (VOAF) brings together dozens of exhibits, workshops, live performances, and visual art installations for visitors to peruse. Selected artists are often individuals/groups facing social exclusion in Vancouver – and self-identify as “outsider” artists. So, if you’re looking for an inclusive space to engage in the local art scene, this is a fantastic opportunity to do it.

Calling all Swifties! Time to celebrate Friday the 13th at The Hollywood, where the DJs will be spinning Taylor Swift all night long at a Halloween-themed celebration.

Opening on Friday, October 13th is The Big Shop of Horrors at The Cowichan Exhibition Grounds, a thrilling haunted house experience inspired by the famed horror musical, Little Shop of Horrors.

American stand-up comedian, rapper, writer, actor, and illustrator Zack Fox clearly does it all, collaborating with everyone from Kenny Beats to Thundercat. And he’ll be performing at the Commodore on October 11th.

From spooky jack-o-lanterns to fun new displays, to live pumpkin carving demos (and plenty of photo ops in between), there is plenty to see at this year’s Pumpkins After Dark event. And as one of the most highly-anticipated fall events in Metro Vancouver – it sets the bar pretty high!

Head to the Improv Centre on Granville Island for a special Halloween-themed murder mystery show set in the 1970s – this week on Friday the 13th! Think Clue but on the stage, with an eclectic cast ready to bring the story to life. Oh, and audience participation is required!

George Kusunoki Miller, known professionally as Joji, is a Japanese singer-songwriter and rapper, known for his unique blend of lo-fi, R&B, and trip-hop.

This attraction isn’t free, but if you’re a fan of haunted rides and weird histories – this one’s the perfect combination. Plus, if you go in larger groups, tickets drop to just over $30 each, which is not too bad at all for a ride on one of the steepest trams in North America!
