This wildlife refuge is home to 250 species of birds and is less than hour from Seattle

Looking to get outdoors? Why not check out the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge? It’s located off Interstate 5 in Olympia, Washington, and is an amazing spot to connect with nature.  Here’s what you can find there.

The refuge was created in 1974 to protect the Nisqually River Delta. The area is full of diverse habitats and is home to “at least 250 species of birds and other wildlife including insects, fish, amphibians, reptiles, and mammals.”

There are year-round trails open to the public that will lead you through the diversity of habitats. It’s an amazing spot to experience wildlife viewing opportunities. It’s also known for being a great spot to take both nature and landscape photos.

While you are welcome to walk alone, the refuge also offers activities for visitors to learn. These include guided walks, and seasonal lectures, among other offerings.

Keep in mind there is a $3 entrance fee to visit and the refuge only accepts cash or check for payment. With that, enjoy!
