Canada’s largest comedy theatre is celebrating “50 years of funny” with a massive new location & killer shows

You know a comedy club is a massive hit when it continues to draw in crowds and stand out among dozens of others in town for half a century. As has been the case with Chicago-born comedy theatre, The Second City Toronto.

The comedy theatre is will complete 50 years in Toronto this June. And they are celebrating the big FIVE-OH with a “brand-spankin’” new location and killer shows, leading all the way into their anniversary month.

On the off chance you missed all the buzz amidst the holiday rush, The Second City now has a new home at One York Street. After being shut during the pandemic, the theatre finally opened doors to its chic and swanky new place last December. And the new location certainly exceeds expectations with its bigger and bolder design.

Taking over the entire third floor, the comedy theatre now has three performance theatres (Mainstage, Theatre ‘73 and John Candy Box Theatre). In addition, there’s a restaurant, three bars and nine training rooms for comedy classes and workshops.

Honestly, this new home seems like an apt place for The Second City Toronto to be celebrating “50 years of funny.” And the celebration involves some hilarious shows across all stages.

The highlight, however, is the ever-evolving inaugural Mainstage show that opened as Home Sweet New Home, and is now running as the 87th Revue.

The show started as an ode to the comedy gold coming from The Second City Toronto over the past decades. And it featured everyday situations at their hilarious best. Think awkward first dates, game nights gone wrong, gender reveals, the freakin’ multiverse and more.

While the underlying theme is still regular situations with a funny twist, the perpetual improvisation has now resulted in a whole new show, aka the 87th Revue. Think of it as a brand new, crispy fresh revue of Home Sweet New Home. And it’s straight-up a laugh riot.

No surprises there given that it is coming out of Canada’s largest comedy club that single-handedly revamped Canadian comedy-scape.
