New ‘The Last Of Us’ featurette takes you behind the scenes of Alberta’s coolest sets

After 9 incredible episodes, HBO’s The Last Of Us has come to an end… for now! Season 2 has been confirmed by the network, but before we jump back into the story, the creators thought it was essential to understand how much love and labour goes into making a show of this scale.

Now streaming, The Making Of The Last Of Us is a short documentary that takes viewers behind the camera and onto the set of the critically acclaimed, Alberta-shot series.

Though it’s only 31 minutes long, everything from the score and source material is explored by the showrunners and Wild Rose Country (having played such an important role) is talked about in depth.

“The Last Of Us is about a journey going across the United States,” said one of the show’s location managers, Matt Palmer.

“Having that variety of landscape really helps make it feel as authentic as possible.”

With callbacks to filming in Fort McLeod, Edmonton, Canmore, and High River, each location is praised individually, with Bella Ramsey, who plays Ellie, even taking the crew on a short tour of Northland Mall in Calgary, which is shown in episode 7.

“This location has been perfect to shoot in because they were going to tear down this mall anyway,” Ramsey explains.

“That’s given the amazing art department free rein to completely destroy it and make it their own.”

Other destinations that they discuss are Okotoks and even Waterton where the crew recalls having to fill 350 dump trucks of snow from surrounding areas to fill the set because it was unseasonably warm in the days that led up to filming.

After all that work? “That night… it snowed,” recalls the SPFX supervisor, Joel Whist.

If you’d like to see the documentary for yourself and get an in-depth look into how they filmed the show, you can check out The Making of The Last Of Us on Crave now.

Check it out, enjoy and prepare yourselves. Because it’s going to be a long spring/summer without the show.
