The Canada-US border will stay shut until the summer

While both countries continue their vaccination programs, the Canada-US border will remain shut for another month, putting to bed current rumours about restrictions lifting. The extension comes as many US states ease physical distancing restrictions, and Canadian provinces try to deal with the recent ‘third wave’.

According to CTV, the Canada-U.S. border will be extended until June 21, 2021. In case you have a hard time remembering the first time it was closed, that date was March 21, 2020. It’s been a long 14 months, folks!

In a nutshell, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said that some 75% of Canadian residents will need to be vaccinated before the border can be reopened. As of May 18th, roughly 47% of Canadians have received at least 1 dose, and Canada is now outpacing the rest of the world when it comes to vaccinations.

And on the flip side, the percentage of Americans is around the same, but the rate at which vaccinations occur has dropped off slightly. So, we’re seeing a couple of things that might affect the reopening schedule.

First off, we’re curious if ‘vaccinated’ means one dose or two, since Health Canada reported the first dose could remain effective for up to 4 months. Then, we’re wondering what may happen if either country hits the 75% target before the other one.

But, only time will tell, we guess! We’ll keep our eyes peeled for any more official announcements for you, folks!
