This Alberta town is hosting a Halloween movie night at a historic grain elevator

As the weather gets colder, outdoor movie nights are becoming harder to find. But before you pack those lawn chairs away for the season, there’s one more screening worth checking out.

This weekend, the town of Nanton is hosting Drive-in Movie Night on the Elevator, turning one of its historic grain elevators into a giant movie screen for a Halloween showing of The Witches.

Here’s what you need to know about the screening, including timing, ticket prices, and what you can bring.

What to expect at Drive-in Movie Night on the Elevator

What is Drive-in Movie Night on the Elevator?

Drive-in Movie Night on the Elevator is an outdoor movie event hosted by the Canadian Grain Elevator Discovery Centre, where you can watch a film from the comfort of your own vehicle.

Instead of being screened on a regular projector, the film will be shown on the side of a historic grain elevator. And this year’s Halloween screening will feature The Witches, starring Anne Hathaway.

What is The Witches about?

If you’ve never seen The Witches, the 2020 fantasy film follows a young orphan who moves in with his grandmother after his parents pass away. But things take a turn when the pair stumbles upon a secret gathering of witches with a sinister plan to get rid of children.

The film is based on Roald Dahl’s book and is rated PG, so you can bring the whole family along to watch.

Where is the screening happening?

The screening will take place at the Canadian Grain Elevator Discovery Centre in Nanton, Alta., about an hour south of Calgary.

When is the screening happening?

The drive-in movie night is on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026, from 7 to 9 p.m. Organizers recommend arriving early if you want a good spot.

How much are tickets?

Tickets cost $42.49 per vehicle, so you can bring friends or family along without buying a separate ticket for each passenger. You can purchase tickets online through the Showpass website.

What should I bring with me?

Organizers recommend bringing blankets and snacks for the screening. There will also be indoor washrooms and a limited concession stand if you happen to need anything.

Since the event is outdoors, you’ll want to bundle up in a few extra layers and bring a warm drink with you.

If you’re up for the drive this weekend, head down to Nanton and catch one of the season’s last outdoor movie screenings.
