The iconic Calgary Wishing Well sculpture has finally found a new home in Bridgeland

Remember the Wishing Well sculpture that was placed at the Genesis Centre in 2012? The one that was removed due to the safety concerns caused by the concentration of reflective sunlight on the sculpture’s inner surface. Well, after almost a decade, the sculpture has now found a new home at Bridge at Bridgeland.

ICYMI, Bridge at Bridgeland is JEMM Properties’ newest offering- a multi-family rental property and retail plaza. And the gigantic, 2,200 kg art piece by popular San Francisco artists, Living Lenses, has been moved to the square outside the rental property for public access.

And yes, it is now absolutely safe for admires, drivers and pedestrians. After years of efforts, The City has found a way to make the sculpture safe for display in a public place.

The inner reflective surface of the sculpture where the sunlight concentration happened has now been covered with a non-reflective coating. Before its (re)installation, the coating was thoroughly tested in a controlled lab environment.

To jog your memory a bit- the sculpture lives up to its name of being a “wishing well.” Only, instead of making your wishes come true, the sculpture turns them into a beautiful light and sound pattern.

The multimedia technology of the sculpture has a unique sound assigned to each letter of the alphabet. And there’s a number provided on the sculpture. Once you text your wish to that number, it creates a unique light and sound pattern based on the letters of your wish.

Pretty incredible, eh?

Don’t know about you, but we sure are heading to the square this weekend to check out this artistic masterpiece. Care to join us?
