The 2021 Canada Reads shortlist, and their champions, has been released

This one is for all you Canadian book worms out there. Canada Reads 2021 has announced its books and the people championing them in this year’s competition.

If you’re not familiar with what Canada Reads is, let us explain. It is a 20-year long-running competition that is trying to figure out what book every Canadian should read that year. It’s sort of like a literary Survivor.

And this year’s theme is “One Book To Transport Us.” Which sounds about right after the year we’ve had.

Each book selected by the shortlist is given one champion, and this year the books and champions are stellar. Here’s the rundown:

  • Olympian and broadcaster Rosey Edeh is championing The Midnight Bargain by C.L. Polk
  • Singer and songwriter Scott Helman is championing Two Trees Make a Forest by Jessica J. Lee
  • Kim’s Convenience star Paul Sun-Hyung is championing Hench by Natalie Zina Walschots
  • Actor Devery Jacobs is championing Johnny Appleseed by Joshua Whitehead
  • TV star and chef Roger Mooking is championing Butter Honey Pig Bread by Francesca Ekwuyasi

So, time to start reading because the debates are slated to begin March 8 on the CBC. Also, given it’s the 20th year, we’re sure there will be lots of literary fun in store.
