Enjoy the beautiful Calgary weather with a picnic in Edworthy Park

The long-range forecast shows temperatures consistently hitting at least the teens, which means spring has finally sprung in Calgary. It’s a prime opportunity to grab a picnic basket and enjoy the great outdoors — after all, the bugs shouldn’t be too bad quite yet. Edworthy Park is a great location to consider for a slice of nature without leaving city limits.

Bordering the community of Wildwood in the southwest, Edworthy Park is 169 glorious hectares of public space, complete with playgrounds, pathways, off-leash areas, fire pits, and, of course, picnic sites.

If you’re craving a hike first, the Douglas-fir Trail runs throughout Edworthy along a densely wooded plateau. It’s a steep slope and goes up to 200 feet high, but if you reach the top, the view is well worth it. If you prefer a more chill route, the Lawrey Gardens offer paved pathways amidst the area’s native grassland.

What’s on your picnic menu? If you’re not keen on packing the basket yourself, you’re in luck — The Lazy Loaf and Kettle is located just a few blocks north of the park. While the cafe boasts baked goods and delicious drinks, its sandwiches are the real stars of the show. Take a few to-go and sink your teeth into homemade bread and fresh ingredients while lounging on a picnic blanket in the park.

If you’d prefer to stay within the boundaries of Edworthy Park, the onsite Angel’s Cafe also offers a full menu, complete with breakfast, lunch and dinner, kids’ and senior meals, cocktails, and other treats.

Whether you’re hanging with friends or family, spending quality time with your partner, or enjoying your own company, a picnic is a wonderful way to get some Vitamin D. Don’t forget to pack a blanket!
