There’s a collection of islands in Alberta with soft sand beaches and ‘ah-mazing’ sunsets

In Alberta, soft sand beaches are few and far between, but what the province lacks in quantity, it makes up for in quality! Whether you like to splash around, get a tan, or go boating, look no further than Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park, a perfect sunny day destination northeast of Edmonton.

For the happy campers

Located less than three hours from Wild Rose Country’s capital city, this incredible park is comprised of several incredibly scenic islands on Lac La Biche, with the largest two being Big Island and Long Island, which are accessible via the causeway bridge.

Here, you can enjoy everything from water sports to an “ah-mazing” sunset from its boardwalk, and whether you’re looking to stay the night or spend a day in the sand, visitors have a ton of options.

Of course, because it’s a pretty popular spot, you’ll want to plan ahead.

For those coming from faraway cities or towns, this provincial park has a campground where you can pitch a tent from May to October, or rent a cabin year-round.

Surrounded by old-growth mixedwood forests, these sites are quiet and provide shade from the sun in warmer months.

Just want to stop by?

The day-use beach, while a bit out of the way for some, is still well worth the drive.

While you’ll have to leave space in your itinerary for the round trip, short-term visitors will still be able to experience all the area has to offer.

Want to check it out? Explore a 300-year-old forest, hit one of the many trails, go birdwatching or biking, then cool off in the lake.

Canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddle boards are available to rent, and there are a ton of places to enjoy a picnic, so don’t forget to bring a basket of goodies.

There is also a boat launch, and you can even go swimming, though we’d recommend checking ahead for any advisories.
