Seattle native Jean Smart won in a big way at this weekend’s Emmy Awards

We always love some Seattle representation and that’s why we’re super pumped that Jean Smart is being recognized in a big way. The Seattle native took home the Emmy for lead actress in a comedy series on Sunday night for her role in HBO Max’s “Hacks.” And it turns out that she wasn’t the only Seattleite at the awards ceremony.

Smart is a true born and raised Seattleite. She attended Ballard High School which is where she got into acting and eventually studied acting right here at the University of Washington. Her career has taken her far with notable roles in 24, Garden StateMare of Easttown, and more.

She won her Emmy for character Deborah Vance in HBO Max’s “Hacks.” If you haven’t seen the show, Vance is a long-time stand-up comedian who works at a Las Vegas casino relying on her old material. The show debuted this year and is well-loved with an 8.2/10 rating on IMDb and a very impressive 100% critic’s score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 56 reviews.

While the big moment for Seattle was definitely Smart’s win, there was more Seattle representation at the ceremony worth mentioning. Other nominations included Hulu’s “Shrill” based on the book by Seattle author Lindy West, Netflix’s “Cobra Kai,” featuring Seattle jack of all trades actor, Yuji Okumoto, and Netflix’s “Bridgerton” based on the novels by Seattle author Julia Quinn.

It actually doesn’t end there though. Bravo’s “Top Chef” Portland edition, featured Seattle chef Shota Nakajima, and NBC’s “The Voice,” featured local contestants Payge Turner, Halley Greg, and Savanna Woods. So give it up for Seattle, this city is definitely on the up and up!
