If you haven’t had a day trip over to San Juan Islands recently, this is your sign. The Islands were recently named among the top 10 best summer travel destinations across the U.S. for 2024.
According to 10Best, the islands, which were ranked at 8th place, have “spectacular vistas.”
The four most populated islands are San Juan, Orcas, Lopez, and Shaw, and they are serviced by the state ferry system. All also offer accommodations for visitors.

“While these islands are diverse and offer different experiences, they all feature spectacular vistas of the Salish Sea, with plenty of water and land activities to keep everyone busy. Accommodations range from hotels and resorts to small inns, vacation rentals, and camping sites,” states the ranking.
Overall, there are 172 named islands and reefs in San Juan County, and according to the San Juan Islands, Shaw Island has limited camping and visitor amenities.
