Here’s a hiking adventure that leads to the most stunning views in Ontario this fall. Experience this worldly adventure, leading you to new heights and panoramic views of the world’s largest freshwater lake. Here’s what to know about the Nipigon River Recreation Trail.

Make your way towards Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area, located east of Thunder Bay.

You’ll find one of the most rewarding hikes in the province here.

The Nipigon River Recreation Trail spans 10.1 km which for hikers, could take an estimated three to five hours to complete.

If you’re a pro/avid hiker, you may be able to finish it in a faster time.

According to Parks Canada, it’s considered a difficult trail due to its length however it is suitable for ages eight and up.

Along the trail, you’ll get to experience the thrilling shoreline of the Nipigon River from Nipigon to Red Rock and along Nipigon Bay on Lake Superior, the world’s largest freshwater lake.

Where do I start?

If your goal is to complete the entire trial, the Township of Nipigion recommends starting in Red Rock.

This portion of the trail is less than a kilometre long and would take you about 15 minutes to complete. It leads to a lookout point.

Per the Township of Nipigon, there are actually seven main trail sections.

What are the trail sections?

  • Woodland Trail (2 km)
    • After the Red Rock portion, you’ll reach the Woodland Trail. It is described as a “rugged trail up occasional steep inclines and through ravines.” Enjoy the view from Eagle Ridge.
  • Hydro Corridor Trail (1.4 km)
    • Trail through woodland, followed by a steep rock climb along the Hydro line (4 pole spans). Here is where you’ll have access to the Eagle Ridge lookout, overlooking Nipigon Bay and its islands, too.
  • Stillwater Creek Trail (1 km)
    • Lines the the shore.
  • Sawmill Point Trail (0.8 km)
    • Walk past open shoreline to a scenic view of the bay.
  • Wetlands Trail (1.7 km)
    • This is a gravelled portion of the trail beside the river and marshlands. It offers the chance to see the waterfowl and animals.

You’ll find several clifftop lookout points with the best panoramic views throughout the way but Eagle Ridge is the most popular.
