This cliffside lookout near Toronto overlooks a canyon of autumn colours

You don’t have to travel far outside of the city to feel like you’re hiking on top of the world. Rattlesnake Point Conservation Area has some of the best views around and it’s less than an hour’s drive from Toronto.

According to Conservation Halton, this destination “will take your breath away,” and we couldn’t agree more.

The cliffside hiking trails, canyon views, turkey vultures soaring through the air, and thousand-year-old cedars growing from the rock are enough to make your jaw drop.

In addition to hiking, this park also offers incredible rock climbing, camping, birding, and picnicking opportunities.

But, the main attraction (especially in the fall) is the Buffalo Crag Lookout Point.

Perched on the Niagara Escarpment, this scenic hike takes you to beautiful lookout points overlooking the Nassagaweya Canyon below and the vast countryside, which transforms into a palette of autumn colours this time of year.

Once you’ve had enough of the views (if that’s even possible), you can hit some of the other trails in the park.

The Nassagaweya Trail connects Rattlesnake Point to the nearby Crawford Lake, which has a boardwalk around a fascinating and rare blue-green lake.

And if the name Rattlesnake Point makes you a bit worried about the presence of rattlesnakes, you have nothing to worry about.

The park was named Rattlesnake Point because, from above, the stretch of escarpment within the park looks like a snake, according to Conservation Halton.

This park tends to get busy during peak times, especially on sunny autumn weekends.

Reservations in advance are recommended but not required — however, you’ll save on gate fees if you book online.
