This small town is Alberta’s “pumpkin capital” & they host the cutest fall fair

If Hallmark movies have taught us anything, it’s that second to the lighting of a Christmas tree, fall festivals are the most magical events of the year. This autumn, there’s no place quite like Smoky Lake, Alberta – a charming town straight out of a feel-good holiday film.

Located northeast of Edmonton, Smoky Lake is the official “pumpkin capital of Alberta,” and even hosts a festival every year attended by people all over the country.

Highly anticipated by gourd enthusiasts and local fun-seekers, The Smoky Lake Pumpkin Fair gets bigger every year, much like the giant orange entries do at the annual weigh-off.

This time around, they’ll kick things off on Thursday with a harvest dinner, before inviting everyone to indulge at the food trucks and a beer garden on Friday night.

On Saturday, they really get into the nitty-gritty, hosting a pancake breakfast, artisan and farmer’s markets, cultural showcase, car show, wine tasting, corn maze, dinner, pumpkin drop and of course, their grand gourd competition.

Featuring pumpkins that weigh well over 1,000 pounds, this unique event is truly something you have to see to believe.

You really won’t want to miss it, but be sure to stick around until Sunday because the fun isn’t over yet!

Described as their “family day,” those in attendance for their last and final romp for the year can participate in a perogy eating competition, a pumpkin carving showcase, more drinks, more food and activities for all ages.
