These were the most popular baby names in Canada last year

While parenthood can begin before the naming of a child, it’s certainly a big milestone in the journey. While settling on a truly one-of-a-kind name might prove to be pretty challenging, there are tons of both traditional and modern names out there that might inspire you. As it happens, Statistics Canada has just released the top baby names in Canada for last year, and the list might just have a couple of surprises.

Whether your name is on the popular side or not, remember it’s the individual who makes the name shine, not the other way around.

What are the top baby names in Canada in 2024?

Here are the top 10 boy names:

  1. Noah
  2. Liam
  3. Theodore
  4. Leo
  5. William

  10. Thomas

Here are the top 10 girl names:

  1. Olivia

For boys, one-syllable names became more common between 1991 and 2024, reflecting a collective preference for “short, strong-sounding names that are easy to pronounce.”

Hence, names like James, Jack, Miles, Luke, Beau, Kai, and Max are becoming increasingly popular across the country.

As for the biggest jumps, however, there are different names to watch. From 2023 to 2024, Zorawar, Weston, Adrian, Roman, and Brooks skyrocketed in popularity. The same can be said for Lainey, Asees, Fatima, Adeline, and Lydia, for girls.

Between 1991 and 2024, flower names also shot up in popularity across Canada. This includes Lily, which jumped from 518th to ninth most popular, Violet, which went from 1,167th to 17th, and Ivy, now in the 33rd spot.

Another fun fact: the name Jasmine has been in the top 100 list of baby girl names since 1991, and James has been consistently ranked among the top 35 boy names.

Do with this info what you will.
