Physical distance circles are back in Toronto – here’s what to know

A telltale sign of summer in Toronto has begun: people are heading over to Trinity Bellwoods Park. If you don’t live under a rock, then you know the Queen West spot has made quite a few headlines over the course of the pandemic. Today they’re making headlines again with the official reinstatement of physical distancing circles.

That’s right! A visit to Trinity Bellwoods means a visit to your very own personal 8-foot patch of grass. The physical distance circles were first introduced last May as a response to the infamous weekend that saw thousands of people crowded and mask-less at the park. Oof.

Of course, these circles aren’t necessarily all bad vibes. The city prepping for folks to head to the park is a surefire sign of the warm weather we’ve already begun to experience here in Toronto. Plus, now that we’re a full year (and a bit) into the pandemic, surely we’ve all sorted out that hanging out in a massive crowd isn’t the move.

Although the province is under a strict stay-at-home order until June 2nd, according to a recent press release, the city knows “that many residents living in apartment buildings and condominiums who do not have yards need space to get exercise and fresh air in City parks.”

The hope is that these circles will allow folks to enjoy a little fresh air while maintaining their physical distance. Of course, given the current restrictions, it is required that folks who do head to the park do so only with members of their immediate household.

The physical distance circles began being painted Thursday morning and should be complete sometime next week.
