Beach season is in full swing, and our province is full of sandy shorelines to explore. If you’re looking for a new hot spot to cross off your list this summer, Petrie Island is a must-visit.

Located in the Ottawa region of Orléans, this island is home to two beaches that stay popular all summer long for their pristine white sand and calm swimmable waters.

The Main Beach is a large expanse of sand across from the Ottawa River, and the East Beach is more sheltered in a Bay, says the Swim Guide.

The beaches are lifeguard-supervised seven days a week throughout the summer until Labour Day weekend.

The water quality is tested daily by Ottawa Riverkeeper and is said to be among the cleanest in the region.

“Many others come to take in the white sand beaches, the Caribbean vibe, and bask in the restorative sunshine,” says the Heart of Orléans BIA.

In addition to swimming and sunbathing, visitors can enjoy canoeing, kayaking, and wildlife watching. The island is home to turtles, birds, and wildflowers.

There are also picnic facilities and volleyball net rentals for those perfect beach outings with friends or family.

Afterward, you can head over to the nearby St. Joseph Boulevard, where you’ll find a wide variety of restaurants for your post-beach day feast.

There’s also a beachside canteen where you can purchase food and drinks.

Unlike Wolfe Island and the Toronto Islands, you don’t need to hop on a ferry to get here.

Petrie Island is easily accessible by car, transit, or bike and there are hundreds of paid parking spots onsite — the price is just $2 for five hours of parking.

Pack up that swimsuit and round up the squad — island life is calling!
