Registering your Ontario licence plate will soon be a thing of the past.
During a press conference Tuesday, Premier Doug Ford shared that drivers will no longer have to re-register their cars and licence plates will be automatically re-registered. Here’s what we know so far about the automatic licence plate renewal in Ontario.

During the press conference, Ford was asked about his elimination of the annual licence plate sticker renewal fee in 2022, as up until now, drivers still had to renew.
“I’m here to announce today actually that we are getting rid of that,” said Ford.
“Registering your vehicle, we did the first step, getting rid of the sticker. Now, we’re getting rid of the re-registration. It will be automatically re-registered so people won’t have to worry about that.”
When asked when this new initiative will start, Premier Ford stated, “I will have to get back to you on that, but we will make sure that’s very soon. Extremely soon.”
Ontario residents can currently still apply to get a refund or credit for their licence plate sticker or driver’s licence.
According to the Ontario government, the amount you get back will depend on when you last renewed and how much you paid.
Licence plate sticker fee refund cheques will be offered to Ontario residents until March 13, 2024. More information on if you qualify can be found here.
