Toronto’s all-night art fest is happening this week & it will have a silent disco

Get excited, Toronto — Nuit Blanche is back! The famous city-wide art celebration will run all night long this Saturday, September 23rd.

There’s a lot to look forward to at this year’s Nuit Blanche. Art installations and interactive experiences will take place from 7 PM to 7 AM in every corner of the city.

The festival has since expanded outside of the downtown core, with incredible artworks to see in Etobicoke, Scarborough, and major institutions around Toronto.

Nuit Blanche is completely free to attend and will feature more than 80 art projects from close to 250 artists from a variety of disciplines.

This year’s curatorial theme is called Breaking Ground, which encourages exploration within the arts community to explore issues related to nature.

“Specifically, Breaking Ground invites artists to explore themes of climate change, the impact of urban development on communities, and collective responsibilities around land and stewardship,” says the City of Toronto’s press release.

Some of the highlights to look forward to include an experience in music and dance at the Toronto Sculpture Garden.

The experience is called To Reflect Everything and it will be a self-led silent disco in the garden accompanied by the lights and reflections of Ryan Van Der Hout’s mirrored installation, which is basically a giant disco ball.

There will also be Leeroy New’s Balangay Starfleet, which will feature reimagined ancient Philippine boats suspended in mid-air.

Your Wish is Your Command, by Divya Mehra, will feature a magic lamp that brings to light the “colonial underpinnings in the Financial District.”

Also in downtown Toronto is a multi-sensory experience called Breaking the Mold.

It will showcase a “fusion of tradition and technology as fine art is transformed into moving, life-size 3D art, accompanied by a boundary-pushing light installation,” the description says.

Previews of all the exhibitions and installations are now posted on the City of Toronto’s website, so you can take a look and plan your night in advance.
