Love an island adventure? There’s a stunning marine park just a few hundred metres offshore from Nanaimo that you’ll definitely want to add to your summer bucket list.
Saysutshun (Newcastle Island Marine) Park is rich in both history and hiking trails, with over 20 kilometres of coastal trails to explore – and all are considered ‘easy’ by BC Parks. So everyone can get in on the fun!
The scenic trails lead hikers through sandy and pebble beaches, forest, and various historic sites.
Engulfed by steep sandstone cliffs and Garry Oak trees, the area has immense cultural value to the Coast Salish Peoples who have occupied the site of Saysutshun Village for centuries.
According to BC Parks, there is evidence of at least two ancient Salish villages, which can be observed through recovered artifacts and middens.
Each spring, the Salish communities hopped to Gabriola Island to fish for cod and gather clams and tubers, according to BC Parks.
In 1849, coal was discovered on the island and the area became a hotspot for coal mining and sandstone extraction.
The island later served as a saltery and shipyard until 1941.
Today, there are many amenities for visitors to enjoy at the park. This includes cold water taps, an adventure playground, a large picnic area, and 18 walk-in campsites.
