Regal Redo: $789 million plan announced for new a Royal BC Museum

If you’re hoping to check out the Royal BC Museum in Victoria, you’ve only got until September to do so! After that, it’ll be at least a few years until you get to check out the new one. Here’s a quick rundown.

Today, the provincial government of BC revealed a huge new plan for the museum. While some of the focus will remain the same, the development of the new museum is one of the first of its size “that partners with local First Nations on the project team.” This will be seen in “design influence” from the Lekwungen peoples, as well as the inclusion of members of the Songhees Nation and Esquimalt Nation.

The projected cost? A cool $789 million, all of which will come from the province. Of course, the project is still in its early steps… and a “new modernized provincial museum” won’t be coming until around 2030. In the meanwhile, the current museum will organize “travelling exhibitions, regional satellite displays and an interactive walking tour in Victoria” in between the closure of the current space and the arrival of the new one.

Additionally, the IMAX theatre, as well as the gift shop and the food trucks around the museum, will stay open until “early 2023”, whenever that ends up being.

Well, it looks like the new Vancouver Art Gallery might have a little competition for the premiere cultural destination in the province! We like that idea. If you’re hoping to learn more about the plan for a new Royal BC Museum, you can check out the official press release right here.
