We’ve got some good news, folks! The CBRE has released its 2021 instalment of Scoring Tech Talent, and Canada is looking better than ever! This yearly report ranks the best cities in North America for the tech industry and its workers, so let’s see what’s going down.

Turns out, Canada’s major cities have either stayed near the top, or continued their climb up the list. For the rankings, CBRE looked at a variety of factors, including things like average salary, commercial real estate cost, education levels and employee diversity. When wrapped together, these factors offer a relatively comprehensive score out of 100.

So, here are the Canadian markets that landed in the top 50 this year, plus their spot on the list last year:

4. Toronto (4)
10. Ottawa (14)
11. Vancouver (12)
16. Montreal (16)
21. Waterloo Region (Unranked)
28. Calgary (34)
34. Quebec City (Unranked)
38. Edmonton (Unranked)

So, not only did 3 Canadian cities move up the rankings, but 3 new names have cracked the top 50 as well! There are lots of reasons for the growth, including lower average rent in some markets and the expansion of major tech companies in others (like Shopify setting up in Ottawa).
