There’s a ‘rare’ limestone canyon, waterfall, and crystal-clear lakes at this BC park

British Columbia is home to many unique natural features, from lakes carved out by ancient glaciers to cascading waterfalls, to fascinating fossils older than the dinosaurs. One incredible destination to add to your map before summer ends is Marble Canyon Park, which sits on a ‘rare’ limestone canyon.

Situated near Lillooet and the historic Hat Creek Ranch, the provincial park has weathered peaks that resemble “crumbling castle walls,” according to BC Parks, surrounded by the rugged Pavilion Mountain Range.

Three small lakes encircle the canyon – Turquoise, Crown, and Pavilion Lakes – all of which boast crystal-clear waters and are popular among fishermen and birders.

The park is also home to one of the best and most easily accessed icefalls in the region, making it a fun pick for avid rock climbers.

Over the past decade, rock climbers from across the Lower Mainland have opened dozens of routes, though the area is still known as the “Cinderella of BC rock” for its ‘undiscovered’ beauty.

Campers have 30 ‘high-density’ vehicle-accessible campsites to choose from ($18 per night) on a first come, first served basis.

Visitors can also check out a beautiful waterfall on the far side of the aptly named Turquoise Lake.

Those who prefer to lounge or slow things down can visit a small sandy beach on Crown Lake.

The park is rich in natural and human history, with strong ties to the Interior Salish people and those who followed the gold rush era.

So there you have it, BC! Consider adding Marble Canyon Park to your next road trip itinerary to or through the Lillooet area!
