There’s a coastal grove in BC with trees that are over 800 years old

Are you a big tree person? BC is home to many beautiful old-growth forests, but Cathedral Grove at MacMillan Provincial Park really stands out. The park protects giant Douglas firs and ancient groves of western red cedars, which visitors can see up close by meandering through one of the area’s many trails.

The old-growth forest has truly stood the test of time, despite a catastrophic windstorm on New Year’s Day in 1997. While some of the trails were never fully recovered, there are plenty on either end of the highway leading to the stunning coastal forest, with some of the trees over 800 years old!

The largest Douglas fir at the park measures more than 9 metres in circumference.

Those who venture to the northern side will find groves of western red cedars by the nearby Cameron Lake, as well as Cameron River, which runs through the park.

According to BC Parks, loop trails lead to a raised viewing platform on the south side of the park, allowing visitors to take in all the scenery.

The majestic grove is located on central Vancouver Island near Qualicum Beach and Port Alberni.

Note that there is currently a campfire ban in effect throughout the park.
