This 40-km sandpit in Ontario is one of the world’s most unique places

Ontario is home to some pretty spectacular natural gems, and at the top of the list is Long Point Beach, a 40-kilometre sandpit that’s gotten very special recognition.

The beach is located at Long Point Provincial Park in Ontario’s southwest. Its natural landscape is so unique it’s been recognized as a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve.

According to UNESCO, there are currently 738 biosphere reserves in 134 countries. These sites are recognized for their excellence when it comes to “the harmonious integration of people and nature.”

“Biosphere reserves are ‘learning places for sustainable development’,” says UNESCO’s website.

“They are sites for testing interdisciplinary approaches to understanding and managing changes and interactions between social and ecological systems, including conflict prevention and management of biodiversity.”

The soft sand, warm and calm water temperatures, and massive camping area make Long Point a very popular spot to visit in the summer.

It’s also one of North America’s top bird-watching destinations, with over 300 different species of migrating birds and 80+ birds nesting there each year.

There are plenty of activities to try at Long Point too, like treetop ziplining at Long Point Eco Adventures, kayak-fishing, boat tours, cycling trails, and a pick-your-own blueberry farm.

Some of Ontario’s best sandy beaches are also nearby, including Port Stanley and Port Dover.

So while we’ve still got plenty of sunny weekends ahead of us, Long Point is definitely worth adding to your calendar.
