The Canadian Coast Guard is hiring lighthouse keepers in remote parts of BC

If you’re always been drawn to lighthouses, this may be your chance to work at one. Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Canadian Coastguard are looking to hire lighthouse keepers in remote areas of BC. So if you’re looking for a job that gets you out of the city, you may have just found one.

Lighthouse-keeping duties include reporting local weather observations to MCTS, relaying radio messages, grounds maintenance, refuelling domestic diesel tanks, and painting buildings, decks, and walkways – for starters.

  • Boat Bluff
  • Bonilla Island
  • Cape Beale
  • Cape Mudge
  • Cape Scott
  • Carmanah Point
  • Chatham point
  • Chrome Island
  • Dryad Point Egg
  • Island Entrance Island
  • Estevan Point
  • Green Island
  • Ivory Island
  • Langara Point
  • Lennard Island
  • McInnes Island
  • Merry Island
  • Nootka Island
  • Pachena Point
  • Pine Island
  • Pulteney Point
  • Quatsino
  • Scarlett Point
  • Trial Island
  • Triple Island

In addition to being able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, applicants must have experience working in a marine environment in “isolated or semi-isolated conditions.”

Applicants must also possess a valid Restricted Operators Certificate (Maritime) or a higher certificate, and be willing to maintain current Standard First Aid certification or Occupational First Aid Level 1 (with a transportation endorsement).

Note that lighthouse keepers must be willing and able to work shifts in a 24/7 environment in all weather conditions. According to the job posting, the salary range for an Assistant Lightkeeper is $49,813 to $66,842 per year.
