There are two Korean ChuSeok festivals in Washington & here’s when to check them out

Get ready to immerse yourself in Korean culture at these ChuSeok Festivals, which are a celebration that promises a delightful blend of tradition and fun. Derived from the Korean words for “autumn eve,” ChuSeok is a time-honored harvest festival observed globally, it is also considered to be Korean Thanksgiving. And now, you have the opportunity to experience its essence firsthand at the APCC’s annual festivities.

Taking place on September 14th, Tacoma is getting its 8th annual Korean ChuSeok Festival, and on September 21st, the 4th annual Korean ChuSeok Festival will be at Gig Harbor. Both are hosted by the Asia Pacific Cultural Center (APCC).

The free festivities are family friendly, and set to be unforgettable days of entertainment and cultural enrichment. There are all sorts of activities, and arts to enjoy like the captivating Samulnori drum dances, the art of crafting paper lotus flowers, and a chance to acquaint yourself with Korean musical instruments.

But that’s not all – you’ll also be able to try a delicious array of traditional Korean dishes for purchase. The festival’s vibrant atmosphere is further elevated by a diverse range of vendors, where you can shop for all sorts of items.

According to South Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Chuseok, or hangawi, is one of the biggest and most important holidays in Korea. “On Chuseok, all family members gather around to pay respect to ancestors with newly harvested crops and fruits, and eat special rice cakes called songpyeon.”

So mark your calendars and get ready for a day brimming with cultural wonder and community!
