There’s a sandy beach in Alberta and it’s ranked among the best in Canada

Warm days and sunny skies have probably put you in the mood for summer. So why not start planning which sandy beach in Alberta to visit? It won’t be long before you’ll want somewhere to cool off and bask in the summer sun, and according to Travel Alberta, this destination was named one of Canadian Geographic’s top 25 beaches.

Kinosoo Beach in Cold Lake, Alberta, is widely regarded as one of the province’s best-kept secrets. Not only does it have an expansive shoreline of soft sand, but it’s one of Alberta’s largest and deepest lakes.

It’s also home to an ancient creature of mythic proportions… if the legends are to be believed.

Alberta’s Ogopogo?

While Kinosoo Beach is renowned as a fantastic summer destination, many don’t know the origins behind the lake’s name.

The moniker comes from folklore of a mysterious creature that resides deep in the lake’s waters. Local First Nations first told early settlers about the great lake monster known as “Kinosoo,” also called “The Big Fish.”

But we wouldn’t let that scare you off. So far, there are no reports of lake-goers being beset by giant fish at this Alberta beach.

What to expect

Aside from the soft sand and inviting water, Kinosoo Beach also has a splash park, beach volleyball and basketball courts, floating docks, a zipline, a full-service concession stand, and walking paths. It’s also a great place to enjoy a serene paddle along the water or fish if you’re an angler.

If the timing lines up, we recommend visiting during the annual festival of Aqua Days. The free event typically takes place on the August (Heritage Day) long weekend and includes live stage entertainment, a market, free water sports rentals, children’s activities, fireworks, and a cardboard boat race.

Besides being considered one of Canada’s Top 25 Beaches, Kinosoo is also completely free to visit. All it’ll cost you is some sunscreen.
