A quiet Ontario town was the backdrop for a popular horror film and other movies

Eastern Ontario has so much to offer, including adorable towns like Kemptville. Located about 50 km south of downtown Ottawa, this small but mighty spot has some pretty cool backstories, including being the backdrop for a popular horror film.

The Blackcoat’s Daughter & other movies

If you’re a fan of horror films, then you may have seen The Blackcoat’s Daughter. The horror movie stars Emma Roberts and was filmed in the heritage buildings and on the grounds of the Kemptville Campus.

That’s not the only movie filmed in Kemptville, though. From spooky to something a little more cheerful, the Lifetime made-for-TV movie The Candy Cane Candidate was also shot here.

Filming locations were in Old Town Kemptville at the old North Grenville District High School and on Prescott Street.

Olivia Holt was the star of yet another movie filmed in town called Turkey Drop, also shot in Old Town Kemptville.

Other things to do

Want to check out one of the filming spots? Kemptville Campus is made up of a series of trails, beautiful any time of year, but really come alive in the fall.

One of the most popular trails is the Sugar Bush Trail. The 1.6 km loop boasts beautiful colours during autumn, all under the beautiful, mature maples of an operating sugarbush.

The Ferguson Forest Centre Arboretum is a great spot to spend time outdoors, too.

Spanning around 10 hectares (25 acres), the area offers a serene space for public use with beaches, forested areas and groomed paths.

The best way to end a day of exploring a new town? With a cold one, of course. Kempville Brewing Company has amazing beer and a gorgeous patio. If you prefer cocktails, they’ve got those too, plus a bunch of delicious bites like sandwiches, pizza, nachos, and duck wings.
