9 smaller venues where you can experience great live music in Calgary

When it comes to Canadian cities with fantastic live music scenes, Calgary may not immediately come to mind. But those who know, know. While YYC gets its fair share of big-name performers, it’s the local acts who embody the heart and soul of Canadian art.

If you want to get into the local music scene but don’t know where to begin, consider starting with a venue rather than a band. With so many fantastic stages in Calgary, you can take in a live show on just about any given night. Here are nine venues that regularly host live music.

Commonwealth Bar & Stage

This former warehouse is currently one of Calgary’s hottest live music venues, with two floors of epic entertainment. The main floor hosts weekly shows, while DJs take residence in the basement on hip-hop nights, so wherever you end up, get ready to dance!

Where: 731 10th Ave. SW

Dickens Pub

There’s almost always something going on at Dickens, whether it’s trivia, drag shows, open-mics, or, of course, live music. Head over on any given night and you’re guaranteed a good time.

Where: 1000 9th Ave. SW

Ironwood Stage & Grill

This all-ages venue offers live music, cocktails, and refined bar fare in a low-light setting, creating the perfect vibe to take in a blues set, open mic night, or other special performances.

Where: 1229 9th Ave. SE

King Eddy

Located next to Studio Bell, this historic venue hosts a regular lineup of shows along with special events. Guests can expect to hear anything from acoustic sets to hip-hop, depending on the night.

Where: 438 9th Ave. SE

Mikey’s Juke Joint & Eatery

Mikey’s is the place to be for all things blues, rock, and jazz. The juke joint also hosts tribute shows, open mic nights, karaoke, comedy, and drag performances. A menu of pub fare and tacos only elevates the already-awesome vibe.

Where: 6404 Bowness Rd. NW

The Blues Can

The Blues Can you know and love has moved from Inglewood to its new location in the northwest. With a show happening every night, you know you can count on this beloved venue to deliver live music that’s as consistent as it is excellent.

Where: 2002 16th Ave. NW

The Palomino Smokehouse

The Palomino has had a reputation as Calgary’s premier BBQ and live music venue since 2004. Adhering to the three B’s — BBQ, bands, and beer — this venue has live music stages on two floors, an outdoor patio, and an unbeatable happy hour.

Where: 109 7th Ave. SW

The Trop Bar & Grill

Described as “the neighbourhood pub you’ll leave your neighbourhood for,” the Trop Bar & Grill hosts live music every Friday and Saturday, with additional shows making the occasional appearance throughout the week.

Where: 1501 34th Ave. SW

Vern’s

Vern’s is a good-old-fashioned dive bar, specializing in punk, metal, and other hardcore shows. A staple in Calgary’s alternative community, this venue has hosted all sorts of underground artists in front of the infamous cymbal wall.

Where: 622 8th Ave. SW
