You can explore tunnels & caves behind Niagara’s majestic frozen falls this winter

Calling all adventure seekers! Starting today, you can explore Niagara Falls’ frozen ice bridges like never before. Niagara Parks has announced that Journey Behind the Falls reopens for the season on January 31st.

As part of the excursion, you’ll get to “descend 125 feet and explore 130-year-old tunnels through the bedrock” with the “thunderous vibrations” of Horseshoe Falls all around you.

The observation deck below has viewing portals cut straight through the rock that’ll give you “a once-in-a-lifetime view of one-fifth of the world’s fresh water crashing down in front of you,” the description says.

“After journeying deep into the bedrock, navigate fascinating tunnels that lead behind the Horseshoe Falls,” it says.

“You’ll find incredible cave-like portals that open behind the falling water, where you’ll see, hear and feel the power of the falls up close.”

The height of winter is an ideal time to visit if you want to see Niagara’s stunning glacier-like formations up close. It may look like the Falls are completely frozen over, but in fact, what you see is actually just a surface layer of frozen mist and the water is still flowing underneath.

Other attractions are reopening this week in the Niagara region too. The Niagara Parks Butterfly Conservatory, Table Rock Market, Table Rock Restaurant, Niagara’s Fury, and the Niagara Parks Power Station will also welcome visitors back this week.

Plus, the Winter Festival of Lights will be burning bright throughout the whole region until the end of February, so there are plenty of things to see and do if you plan to visit.

JOURNEY BEHIND THE FALLS

Where: 6650 Niagara Parkway
When: Opens January 31st
Cost: $15.50 per adult
