“Cathedrals of ice”: This popular Alberta hiking trail is even better in the winter

Fall’s end is upon us and the Rocky Mountains have come to life with glistening snow and a chill in the air. With winter just around the corner, many of you may be wondering how to make the most of the colder months and if you want our advice – check out Johnston Canyon in Banff National Park, Alberta.

This particular destination is undeniably enchanting in the summertime, but when frozen – is truly something else.

With several towering waterfalls, those who check it out this holiday season will see it in a whole new light – and can even do so in the evening!

Starting December 1st (depending on the weather), travellers will be encouraged to book a Johnson Canyon tour under the stars with the help of a trusty guide.

On this once-in-a-lifetime excursion, guests will hike along the suspended catwalk, will see all there is to see and at the end of the evening – will be treated to maple cookies and hot chocolate.

“Using headlamps and powerful flashlights, our guides illuminate the water-formed Canyon, the spectacular frozen rock walls and our “Cathedral of Ice” at the Lower Falls, offering a truly unique perspective on this stunning environment,” Banff Adventures writes.

“Along the way, your guide will highlight unique features and pause for moments of darkness and quiet to foster an appreciation for spending time in the canyon at night.”

Want to skip the tour and check it out during the daytime? Not to worry!

While a pair of ice cleats is STRONGLY recommended, those who want to check it out themselves can do so this winter with friends or family.

“The trail is usually very icy,” Parks Canada warns. “Travel in the depths of the canyon on wide trails and narrow bridges with railings that lead to the Lower Falls or to the spectacular 30 m high frozen Upper Falls.”

“Travel an additional 3.2 km beyond the Upper Falls to reach the Ink Pots.”

Sure, this trail is well known – but it’s for good reason, Alberta! Johnston Canyon is spectacular – so get ready!

It won’t be long until it’s a frozen wonderland!
