It’s becoming likely that the NBA will add an expansion team in Seattle

The pandemic has forced a lot of people to get creative, including the NBA. After NBA owners got a rude economic awakening during the last year, the idea of expansion looks like it’s on the table. Luckily for us, Seattle is a top choice city for a new NBA team.

The change in attitude towards expansion comes after many NBA owners are seeing a potential cash infusion in the idea rather than a further division of revenue. Seattle is a prime choice as it has a strong NBA fanbase and past arena issues have been fixed with the new Climate Pledge Arena. So we’re going to keep our fingers crossed for a new team.

Michael Grange of Sportsnet had this to say about the future of the NBA in Seattle.

“It’s widely believed the NBA will expand for the first time since rounding out to 30 teams in 2004 partly to recoup losses from the pandemic. Returning to Seattle as part of the process is almost a given (with Las Vegas as the other likely city) now that the arena issues that led to the Supersonics leaving for Oklahoma City in 2008 have been resolved.”

You also probably remember that earlier this year NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan had some chats about the subject. So while a new team is years and billions of dollars away, we’re still excited. After all, it’s been far too long since Seattle has had an NBA team. Learn more by clicking here.
