In 2020 Washington State Ferries carried more cars than people for the first time ever

This may or may not come as a surprise but Washington State Ferries ridership dropped quite a bit in 2020. In fact, it was down 41% from 2019. So clearly most of us were staying on the mainland last year. Well, it makes sense, COVID-19 and all.

To put this in perspective, Washington State Ferries carried more cars than people last year. And that’s a first since the ferries inception in 1951. Not to mention Washington’s ferry system is the largest in the entire country so this is actually a pretty big deal. We personally did not hop a ferry last year and can say we missed it dearly.

And if you’ve ever used the ferry system before, you know that there are multiple routes. It turns out last year the biggest drop in ridership was 64% between the Seattle/Bremerton route. But don’t get scared because our ferries aren’t going anywhere. In fact, ridership is steadily rising once again.

Just make sure to be aware of the fact that you were entering a smaller community, so take extra COVID-19 precautions.
