This may or may not come as a surprise but there are a lot of Americans who claim Irish heritage. In fact, 31.5 million American residents make this claim. So we thought we’d take a look at the numbers. More specifically, the numbers for Seattle and Washington state as a whole.

It makes sense but some of the states with the most Irish ancestry also happen to be the most populous. But you might be surprised by some of the states that rank highly on the list. And what’s pretty cool is that you can actually check out Irish ancestry by county. That’s all thanks to this interactive map from the United States Census Bureau below.

If you take a look at King County you’ll see that it’s actually number 10 in the nation for people claiming Irish ancestry. And that’s pretty impressive and also all the more reason to celebrate Saint Patty’s Day in a fun and safe manner this year. Cheers to the nearly 200k Irish descendants living in our state.
