There’s a blue-green lake in Alberta where you can swim and float

Horseshoe Lake in Jasper

In Banff, Canmore, and Waterton, you’ll find some of the prettiest water in the country, but few are as big, blue and refreshing as Horseshoe Lake in Jasper.

Known to few but loved by many, this crystal-clear swimming hole is surrounded by tall cliffs and lush green trees.

Whether you’re in search of a tranquil oasis or want to have some fun, this scenic spot should definitely be on your must-visit list, though there are a few things of note.

What to do in the area

Named among the best lakes in Jasper, Horseshoe Lake is where visitors go to have a picnic, get a tan, people watch, and take a dip.

Despite being described as chilly by some, many take to the sapphire lagoon to go swimming and even cliff diving, though jumping off the overhanging rocks is not recommended.

While you can float, bob, and paddle, Parks Canada does encourage adventure seekers to leap, as the enchanting destination has some deceivingly shallow pockets of water and can be pretty dangerous, especially if you’re not experienced enough.

“Horseshoe Lake is located along the Icefield Parkway and has long been viewed as a cliff jumping area for thrill seekers, a cool swimming location on a hot day and a beautiful setting for picnicking and strolling,” they write on their website. 

“Make sure your day at Horseshoe Lake is a safe one by not cliff jumping.”

How to get there

If you’d like to check it out and plan on taking Parks Canada’s advice, the first step is to start the car.

Horseshoe is located approximately 20 minutes south of the Jasper townsite on Highway 93.

If you’re coming from Calgary or Edmonton, expect a four-hour drive.

It’s something else, so pick a weekend, hit the mountains and enjoy, Alberta.

You won’t regret it.
