Calgary practically runs on caffeine so when we’re gifted one more place to fuel up, it’s definitely worth mentioning – especially if that new shop is in prime craving territory. After placing its signage in the windows of 17th Avenue’s vacant Starbucks back in May, Higher Ground has finally opened its doors to the public and we could not be more excited to check it out.

Since announcing that they were closing 300 locations Canada-wide, Starbucks has made way for a ton of locally owned places to expand – and it was bittersweet.

On one hand, we lost a pretty consistent shop, where ordering really just felt like second nature – but on the other hand, growing chains like Higher Ground, a Calgary-born spot suddenly had one less competitor and in this case, some sweet new digs.

If you’re among the few who have never actually check them out, here’s a little introduction!

Higher Ground is honestly one of the cities warmest and most beloved little cafes, with other locations in Kensignton as well as Capitol Hill.

It’s open late and makes for an amazing place to get things done, socialize, mind your own dang business, relax, people-watch, or even take a first date.

They’ve got a super lengthy menu and pride themselves on being 100% organic, fair trade & rainforest alliance certified and are super community-oriented.

If this sounds like your kind of joint, we’d definitely recommend checking them out! Heck, maybe we’ll see you there.
