If you thought 2021 couldn’t get any weirder and wilder, fasten your seatbelts because Facebook, errrr… Meta is taking us for a wild ride. The newly renamed social media giant just released a peek into its new metaverse and it’s certainly… meta. Let’s take a deeper dive.

Mr. Zuck himself opened the Metaverse introduction video with some very humanlike acting to make sure we’re all comfortable with our soon-to-be entirely digital world. Described aptly by him as “the feeling of presence – this is the defining quality of the Metaverse, you’re going to really feel like you’re there with other people.” It’s almost as if it’s just like life…

But how does it all work? Basically, you get to be yourself in a digitally created space. Zuck went on to explain it like this “avatars will be as common as profile pictures today but instead of a static image they’re going to be living 3D representations of you.” You’ll have a photorealistic avatar for work, a stylized one for hanging out, and a fantasy one for gaming.

You’ll be able to navigate all kinds of different spaces, games, and different worlds through “teleporting”. According to Zuck, we’ll be “inhabiting worlds that are just as detailed and convincing as this one on a daily basis.” Folks will be able to access the Metaverse with all kinds of different devices, VR, AR, computer, and even your phone. And you’ll have new ways of interacting with these devices that are supposed to be much more “natural” by making things happen through movement and even thought. Spooky!

That being said, the true Metaverse is a ways off. A new world of this sort will require a whole lot of programming and creative power not to mention forms of governance, ecosystem building, norm-setting. So don’t worry, the world as we know it isn’t going dark quite yet. In the meantime, you can watch Zuck describe the brave new world by clicking here.

And if you want to get really into it, you can watch the full hour-long keynote above. Enjoy folks!
