It certainly isn’t every day that we get to see the moon pass over the sun, and thank goodness because the internet would never talk about anything else. This morning thousands of Canadians woke up at the break of dawn to catch the very first annular solar eclipse of the year, and naturally, Twitter and Instagram went absolutely nuts.
Though our neighbouring star wasn’t completely overshadowed by the freezing rock, Canada got to snap a few photos of what is called the ‘ring of fire,’ which in our opinion, looks a heck of a lot better from behind the lens.
All over the globe, shutterbugs shared snaps of the larger-than-life event were all over social media – and because A. – some of the pictures were stunning and B. – the entire west coast wasn’t able to see it – we’ve decided that it was worth compiling some of our very favourites.
Here are some of the best solar eclipse photos taken in Canada!

Today in mostly eastern and northern Canada, residents were treated to the partial phases of an annular eclipse at sunrise. This photo was taken by Howard Simkover positioned on the north shore of the Ottawa River, Gatineau, Quebec. A brilliant way to start your day. #ASE2021 pic.twitter.com/UcAi9lbEh6

This won’t be the best picture you see of eclipse today but it was fun to watch here in Eastern Ontario. #sunrise #ShareYourWeather @weathernetwork pic.twitter.com/aZxTZstv4L

We think we might need to get a better camera because it definitely didn’t look like that from behind an iPhone. Next year we’ll be more prepared!
