Here’s where you can (and can’t) set off fireworks in Metro Vancouver this Halloween

Halloween fireworks are an interesting Vancouver tradition that we can’t say we fully understand. However, to each their own – as long as you’re following fire safety guidelines, right? While the City of Vancouver has made it clear that Halloween fireworks (and fireworks in general) are prohibited, there are a handful of municipalities that have given the go-ahead. So with that in mind, here’s where you can (and can’t) set off fireworks in Metro Vancouver this Halloween.

Fireworks allowed

• District of North Vancouver: Fireworks can be set off on private property with a $5 permit between 6 and 10 p.m. on Monday, October 31st. Must be 19+ to purchase.
• District of West Vancouver: Fireworks can be set off on private property from 5 to 10 p.m. on October 31st with a $5 permit. Permits can be purchased at Fire Station 1 (760 16th Street) until October 28th. Must be 18+ to purchase.
• City of Burnaby: Fireworks can be bought legally between October 25th and 31st every year at select businesses. Fireworks can be set off on private property on October 31st. Permits can be obtained at Burnaby Fire Station #1 (4867 Sperling Avenue). Must be 18+ to purchase.

• City of New Westminster: Low-hazard fireworks can be set off on private property from 4 p.m. to midnight. Fireworks can be set off on public property only with the written permission of the Fire Chief. Must be 18+ to purchase.
• City of Port Coquitlam: Fireworks can be set off on private property until 11 p.m. on October 31st with a $30 permit. Permits can be obtained at the Tax Office at Port Coquitlam City Hall (2580 Shaughnessy Street). Must be 18+ to purchase.
• City of Port Moody: Fireworks can be set off on private property on October 31st if registered here.

Fireworks not allowed

• City of Vancouver: Must be a certified firework technician.
• City of North Vancouver: Must be a certified Fireworks Supervisor intending to use for a public display only.
• City of Richmond: Must be a licensed Fireworks Display Supervisor or Senior Pyrotechnician.
• City of Surrey: Must obtain a special permit.
• City of Langley: Must obtain a special permit and a Fireworks Supervisor’s Certificate.
• City of Delta: Must obtain a special permit.
• City of Coquitlam: Must obtain a special $50 or $100 permit.
