Historic archipelago in B.C. named one of the best places to travel in the world in 2025

From Australia’s bright pink lakes to the dramatic cliffs of the Dolomites, the BBC’s list of the 25 best places to travel in 2025 covers every corner of the world, recognizing some of the most remarkable travel destinations and experiences. This includes British Columbia’s breathtaking archipelago, Haida Gwaii.

A testament to the province’s rich Indigenous history, the group of over 150 islands is home to more than 6,800 species, including endemic birds, plants, and distinct mammals like the “Haida Gwaii Black Bear.” According to the BBC, the Haida People have lived here for at least 15,000 years, as evidenced by the 19th-century Haida village of SG̱ang Gwaay (formerly known as “Ninstints”), a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Comprised of a larger island and 27 small islets, the village contains upright and fallen cedar totem poles, house pits, and the ruins of longhouses – all being allowed to decay naturally as per Haida tradition, according to Haida Tourism.

“What makes Haida Gwaii a standout destination in 2025 is the groundbreaking Gaayhllxid/Gíihlagalgang “Rising Tide” Haida Title Lands Agreement,” the BBC notes. “This legislation marks a transformative moment in Indigenous rights in Canada, officially recognizing the Council of the Haida Nation as the territory’s governing body under federal law.” This means greater opportunities for revitalizing Haida culture and environmental stewardship at Haida Gwaii and the Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve.

In addition to checking out the Haida Gwaii Museum and staying at Haida House, visitors can explore the ruins of SG̱ang Gwaay on foot, remaining on the guided paths to respect the ancient village site.
