You can stand atop a massive ‘batholith’ over looking a lake in Ontario

There’s no shortage of natural wonders in Ontario. Our landscapes are composed of crystal clear lakes, lush greenery, and towering rock faces. If you’re craving a natural spectacle, look no further than Gros Cap Conservation Area.

Home to steep cliffs and bluffs that rise dramatically above Lake Superior, this gem is about eight hours away from Toronto. Gros Cap Conservation Area can be found in Sault Ste. Marie.

According to Sault Ste. Marie Region Conservation Authority, its bluffs soar between 60 and 90 metres above the water. As stunning as the sight can be, these rugged cliffs are not just for show. They overlook one of the busiest shipping lanes on the Great Lakes, adding a touch of maritime history to the stunning landscape.

Rock and roll

Though jaw-dropping views aren’t the only shocker here. Gros Cap sits atop a batholith.

You may be sitting there, wondering, “Well, what is a batholith?”

According to Merriam-Webster, a batholith is “a great mass of intruded igneous rock that for the most part stopped in its rise a considerable distance below the surface.”

The massive underground granite formation was once fiery magma, bubbling and pushing up from deep within the earth. Talk about dramatic origins!

The conservation authority calls its geology a bit unusual because of this.

The area is a botanical wonderland, home to a medley of vegetation types from mixed forests and cedar swamps to hardwood stands and rare wildflowers.

For the adventurous souls, the 40-kilometre Saulteaux section of the Voyageur Trail starts here and winds its way to the Hiawatha Highlands.
