This regional park is home to BC’s oldest-working nut farm & you can harvest your own

Looking for an out-of-the-box fall activity to enjoy with the family? BC happens to be home to a century-old nut farm that is still in operation to this day, and if you’re a fan of hazelnuts, chestnuts, and walnuts, you can even harvest some of your own this season.

Gellatly Nut Farm Regional Park is a fantastic day trip idea if you’re looking to get out of the city for a bit. Situated on the shores of Okanagan Lake in West Kelowna, it offers visitors flat (and wheelchair-accessible) walking trails that meander through nut tree groves, which are ranked “easy” by Tourism Kelowna.

Here, the focus is the heritage nut farm, which frows several varieties of nuts throughout the year. Sales occur from September through November, when the nuts ripen and fall off of the trees, according to the park’s website.

Note that if you’re looking to gather some nuts yourself, only ones that have ripened and fallen to the ground may be harvested.

According to the park’s website, hazelnuts are typically ripe come early September, while walnuts and chestnuts ripen in late September, depending on weather.

Also of note – the park is dog-friendly and features an array of picnic tables, a playground, a small beach, and washrooms.

Nut sales & info

The park is open from dawn to dusk (6 am to 9 pm), though nut sales are currently open seven days a week from 12 to 4 pm until mid-October. All varieties of nuts are $5/lb, whether they’re picked yourself or purchased separately.

If you’re keen on making a day of it, there’s also a fall Nut Harvest Celebration coming up in early October.

So there you have it, BC! If you’re looking for a unique fall activity to enjoy this year, look no further.
