Toronto confirmed as one of the host cities for the FIFA World Cup 2026

While the 2022 FIFA World Cup is just around the corner, we’re pleased to let you know that Toronto will be joining the next one as a host! Today, FIFA announced the list of host cities for the 2026 World Cup, which will be spread across America, Mexico, and of course, Canada.

It’s actually quite a big deal, representing a few firsts for the tournament and the country. First off, the tournament will be expanding, with 80 matches planned, as opposed to the current 64. The partnership is special as well- it’s going to be the first time ever that 3 of them have joined forces to host.

And it’s a win for Canada, to boot! This will be the first time our country has hosted more than qualifying matches for the global tournament, and we should expect to see 10 or so games spread between Toronto and Vancouver, which also got the nod. Mexico will get around 10, too, while America takes the biggest slice of the sporty pie, with 60 games slated for them, including all matches from the quarterfinals onward.

Naturally, the matches will be played at BMO Field, which has a relatively small (at least by World Cup standards) capacity of 45,500. Yeah, maybe don’t worry about getting tickets quiiittteee yet, but definitely keep your eyes peeled for announcements.

Regardless, and especially since Canada managed to make it into this year’s FIFA World Cup, we think we’re only going to get more and more excited about it!
