New this year is a unique, interactive feature offered by FanDuel that actually lets you bet on the outcome of award categories. All the more reason to get in on the action!

Place your bets – really!

Add some stakes to your festival experience and interact with TIFF in a whole new way this year.

FanDuel, North America’s sports betting destination, is adding a fun twist to it all by launching a series where Ontario movie lovers can make their predictions about TIFF, including prospective winners of the following awards:

  • Outright People’s Choice Award
  • Outright People’s Choice Documentary Award
  • Outright People’s Choice Midnight Madness Award

That’s right, for the first time ever, FanDuel will be putting real odds on TIFF prizes. The bets are capped at a $100 max to keep the stakes low so you can engage with the festival in an enjoyable and responsible way.

To place your bets, just visit FanDuel’s website and join in the fun. Who knows? If your favourite film comes out on top, you could be a winner too!

With that in mind, let’s run through a few flicks we can’t wait to see at TIFF this year that might just take home some awards.

5 must-see movies showing at TIFF

The Shrouds

This Canadian film by David Cronenberg is a dark tale about a technological entrepreneur grieving the death of his wife who creates augmented burial shrouds that let loved ones watch their lost family members decompose. It’s said to be the saddest movie Cronenberg has ever made, so bring your tissues for this one.

The Last Showgirl

Explore another side of Vegas in this film by Gia Coppola starring Pamela Anderson, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Dave Bautista. When a Las Vegas showgirl (Pamela Anderson) must abruptly confront the end of her 30-year career, she faces an uncertain future, not least of which is reconnecting with a daughter she hardly knows.

Cloud

If you’re a fan of Japanese cinema, then you have to check out Kiyoshi Kurosawa’s latest film. This suspenseful thriller explores the sinister dark side of modern society, where digital anonymity can fuel real-world malice. Prepare yourself for two hours of eerie tension and chilling visuals.

40 Acres

This Canadian film by R.T. Thorne is set in a post-apocalyptic future. Food is scarce, and the last descendants of a Black family of farmers are forced to protect their homestead from an organized militia hell-bent on taking their land and home.

We Live in Time

You’ll recognize Oscar-nominated actors Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield in John Crowley’s film. This romance told across three distinct chronologies explores the age-old question of how to make the most of our time in this world.
