Algonquin Provincial Park is already one of Ontario’s most popular outdoor escapes in the summer. But in the fall, its stunning landscape is painted in yellow, red and orange, transforming the beloved provincial park into an autumn wonderland. If you didn’t get a chance to go this summer, fear not because the best time to visit is actually just starting.

Fall in Algonquin is absolutely stunning. There’s a reason why visitors from all over the world make their way to the provincial park to experience the beautiful colours of autumn.

If you’re eager to head out and explore Algonquin Provincial Park, we’ve compiled a little guide that will help your fall journey for the next few months.

When will we see fall colours?

Per Ontario Parks, the fall colours usually pop starting mid-September to mid-October.

The exact timing is unknown as it differs from year to year.

When’s the best time to visit?

If you’re hoping to ditch the crowds and explore the park on a peaceful note, Ontario Parks suggests visiting weekdays from Monday to Thursday.

“Fall weekends get extremely busy, especially at the West Gate. The Thanksgiving long weekend is especially busy,” shares the site.

“Planning your arrival to avoid these times will reduce potential crowding on already busy trails and other park facilities. If you purchase your permit ahead of time, there is no need to stop at the East or the West Gate to check in.”

And since you’re coming for the fall colours, OP suggests selecting the Highway 60 Corridor reservation.

Anything new for the year?

You won’t have to test your luck to see if there’s capacity at the park. According to Ontario Parks, all of its daily vehicle permits are available in advance.

So that means you will know in advance if capacity has been reached for the upcoming weekend. Updates will be provided on its social media.

“If we have already sold all daily vehicle permits for a certain day and you arrive at either the East or West Gate of the Highway 60 Corridor, you will not be able to purchase a permit (or use your seasonal pass), and you will not be able to visit the park,” shares OP.

Now that you know where and when to visit, it’s time to secure that permit and pay this beautiful spot a visit.

If you want to make sure you get a chance to explore Algonquin’s extremely busy fall season, make that reservation asap!
