Fall is just a few days away and it’s time to plan your seasonal activities! Since we’ve been loving fall driving routes, we have another one that winds past villages, along quiet roads and farmlands. It’s the Rideau Canal and Battersea loop – here’s what to know.

The Township of South Frontenac highlighted the Rideau Canal and Battersea scenic route as it is one of the best loops to view vibrant displays of fall colours, rolling farm fields, and glistening lakes — with pit stops along the way for those delicious autumn treats.

And if you haven’t guessed yet, this route begins in Kingston, Ontario.

The driving route

Your journey will begin by heading north from the historic city on Highway 15. Along the way you will come across a local farm stand that sells apples and snacks, if you’re lucky.

Just south of Seeley’s Bay, hang a larry (aka left) onto Burnt Hills Road. This is where spatial awareness is important because the road is very windy so you’ll want to drive slowly.

After a few kilometres, you’ll cross over the iconic Brass Point Swing Bridge on the historic Rideau Canal. This is a sight you’ll want to embrace.

Then you’ll make it to the village of Battersea. You’ll want to stop and get lunch or stretch your legs along the Millburn Creek Trail.

Before heading back towards Highway 15, detour to Gilmour Point Park on Wellington Street for a tranquil beach view or a picnic by the lake if the weather permits.

Then, turn left on Sunbury Road (County Rd 12) and head towards Canal Road. Make a left and visit Upper Brewers Lock on the Rideau Canal, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

And continue along the route to return to the beginning.

Get ready to enjoy the simple pleasures of fall in South Frontenac!

The colours are stunning and so is the adventure.
