One of the most beautiful parks on Vancouver Island has two cascading waterfalls

Love chasing waterfalls? You don’t have to go far to check out the spectacular Englishman River Falls at one of the most beautiful parks on Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

Established in 1940 to protect the area’s vast old-growth forest, the Englishman River, and its incredible waterfalls, the park’s name is said to be derived from the Indigenous peoples’ discovery of a skeleton of a European settler at the base of the falls, according to Parksville Qualicum Beach.

Today, it stands as a testament to the natural beauty and breathtaking diversity of south-central Vancouver Island, which also includes the marvels at the nearby Cathedral Grove and Pacific Rim National Park.

Located a short drive from Parksville and Qualicum Beach, the majestic falls cascade into a river canyon, surrounded by lush old-growth and second-growth forests.

There are two scenic bridges for visitors to take in the spectacular views and feel the refreshing mist on their faces.

During the summer months, the lower falls transform into a crystal-clear pool that’s known as one of the best swimming holes in the area.

And if you manage to visit the park in early fall before it closes at the end of September, there’s a strong chance you’ll catch a front-row seat to the spawning salmon!

Camping & info

In terms of camping, there are spacious, vehicle-accessible campsites nestled in the mature forest available by reservation and on a first-come, first-served basis for $23 per night.

Note that the park gates are open from May 1st to September 30th every year.

So there you have it, BC. If you’re craving a magical late summer or early fall adventure, you’ll surely be ‘wowed’ by the spectacular falls in all their glory!
