Here’s what the new Eglinton Crosstown West Extension could look like

Anyone who’s ever been to Toronto knows that the Eglinton Crosstown has been a long time coming. The first phase of the LRT line, called Line 5 Eglinton, is set for completion this fall. When it’s all said and done, the line will link the city’s far west to the far east, allowing commuters to get across town 60% faster.

A planned extension of the line, called the Eglinton Crosstown West Extension, is now in the planning stages. Metrolinx has released renderings of the new line, which will be 9.2 km of both underground and elevated transit.

The train will run underground from Renforth Drive to just west of Scarlett Road, then it will transition into a 1.5 km elevated section east of Jane Street. Then, it will head underground to its final destination of the new Mount Dennis Station.

The renderings illustrate the above-ground section of the line, which will be suspended above Eglinton Avenue and be as close as possible to nearby parks like Fergy Brown, Eglinton Flats, and Pearen.

Passengers will get to enjoy the view out the window and guard rails will be installed for additional protection.

Metrolinx is now seeking feedback from the public about how to design the areas below the elevated section, whether it be public art displays, open spaces, areas for low growth habitats and pollinators, or informational plaques about the Humber Valley area.
